AUIS Faculty Member Participates in International Philosophy Symposium in Slovakia

Hareim Hadi Hassan, Assistant Professor of Political Argumentation in the Social Science Department at the American University of Iraq, Sulaimani (AUIS), participated in the international symposium Deep Disagreement and the Limits of Argumentation, held on October 21, 2026, at the Institute of Philosophy, Slovak Academy of Sciences, in Bratislava, Slovakia.

The symposium brought together international scholars specializing in argumentation theory, epistemology, ethics, and political philosophy to explore political polarization, deep disagreement, and the role of constructive dialogue.

Hassan presented his research titled “Argumentative Civility and the Role of Argumentation in Polarized Discourse: The Turkish–Kurdish Peace Process.” His presentation examined how argumentation can either deepen political divisions or encourage meaningful dialogue, emphasizing the importance of mutual recognition, equal political dignity, and openness to different perspectives.

The symposium provided opportunities for international scholarly exchange, research collaboration, and potential publication in Topoi: An International Review of Philosophy, published by Springer Nature.

Hassan's participation reflects AUIS's commitment to advancing academic research, fostering international collaboration, and contributing to global discussions on complex political and philosophical issues.
