The competition invited 24 universities from the Kurdistan region to participate in the three round competition. A team of six AUIS students from different majors played against a team from the Sulaimani Polytechnic University. The teams were challenged to collect points by answering questions from 12 categories including science, geography, history, technology, etc… The AUIS team consisting of Awyer Krekar, Ara Ibrahim, Barzi Mohammed, Bawan Awat, Jwtyar Jamal, and Zhalin Ibrahim won by scoring the most points, qualifying them to move to the next round. The AUIS Engineering Club is organizing an interdepartmental event, AUIS STEM, April 17-19 from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM each day in the AUIS Conference Hall. The event will be comprised of competitions and exhibitions by the Information Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics and Natural Science Departments. SULAIMANI, February 19, 2018 - Students from the American University of Iraq, Sulaimani (AUIS) will represent Iraq at the 59th Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition in Washington, DC this April after receiving the first place prize during the national qualifying rounds on February 12. The Jessup Competition is the largest moot court competition in the world with participants from 645 law schools in 95 countries. Teams will represent fictional nation states in disputes before a panel of judges in a model of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the United Nations’ principal judicial organ. Led by faculty advisor Prof. Ali Ahmed, AUIS students Linda A. Alkarim, Mohammed Fatih, Mohammed Nasih, Rawezh Othman, and Shatoo Diyar Bakir competed against three other teams before a panel of ten judges in the Iraqi qualifying rounds at Erbil’s Salahaddin University. “I’m so impressed with the way our students performed,” Prof. Ahmed said. “The team has overcome so many challenges and came out on top against some of the best law students in the country.” This year marks the first time AUIS students have participated in the Jessup Competition, while the University previously hosted qualifying rounds in 2016. ### AUIS is the first non-government, not-for-profit, American-style institution of higher education in Iraq. Celebrating its tenth anniversary this year, it is also the first non-governmental university in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region to be accredited by both the Federal Government of Iraq and the Kurdistan Regional Government. The AINAC 2016 conference is an event set by the Arabic Innovation Network to gather students from the Middle East and bring them together to present their ideas and compete in challenges. This year, and for the second time, the conference took place in Jordan. It is usually held in different places. I applied and got accepted as a challenger. I was put into a team of two other girls from Palestine and we were given a company that wants a unique solution for a certain obstacle that it’s facing. Our company in the challenge was Aramex, Aramex is an international express, mail delivery and logistics services company based in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Jordanian Fadi Ghandour and Bill Kingson founded the company in 1982. Aramex was facing a problem in designing a package that fits medical and pharmaceutical shipment purposes. They sent us their requirements, like how they wanted the package to be, and it was up to us to design it. We were given a time frame of two days to write a fully detailed report about the design and the materials used, we were also required to give a PowerPoint presentation to the board of Aramex. So we presented our design idea, which we made to be very simple, eco friendly, and costumer friendly. We were lucky enough that they liked it and decided to adopt it. Our reward is a fully paid and covered internship of three to six months in Amman at Aramex in a time frame of our choice. Amman was lovely, they made things so easy for us to that we didn’t face any difficulties adjusting, and I loved the atmosphere. I got to know few of the very known people in the Middle East, which is always a plus to building up your network. I am now working with them to start a “society” of the conference in AUIS that allows students from AUIS to take part. I decided this was a good idea, as a lot of our engineering students would really enjoy the experience.
Come and enjoy creative displays of Rube Goldberg models by AUIS students! The Engineering Club is hosting their second annual AUIS Rube Goldberg competition on November 24th after the success of last year's event. This time, the audience will also get a chance to pick their favourite model. Read about the first AUIS Rube Goldberg competition here. Rube Goldberg was an American cartoonist, engineer and inventor. He has become famous for his Rube Goldberg Invention comics which depict simple tasks being completed through a series of complicated steps connected in a chain reaction. Although he never created the machines in his comics, it has inspired other engineers to create their own. The Rube Goldberg annual competition invites high school and college level teams from around the world to create their own Rube Goldberg machines to complete a simple task.
