Lecture: The United States, Iraq and the Kurds: Shock, Awe and Aftermath

Location:
AUIS
Wednesday, October 15, 2014 - 12:00 to 13:00

Dr. Mohammad Shareef will discuss the evolution of US foreign policy towards Iraq at supra-national (global), national (Arab Iraq) and sub-national (Iraqi Kurdistan) levels.

Dr. Shareef will argue that US foreign policy towards both Arab Iraq and Iraqi Kurds is dictated by the supreme US Grand Strategy. He will explain that US policy towards both Arab Iraq and Kurdistan is one of continuity rather than change. Shareef will talk about the events surrounding US Iraq policy in three distinct phases, going back to 1979 with regard to Arab Iraq and 1961 with respect to the Kurdish liberation movement. He will examine US interests in Iraq, the reasons for the 2003 invasion and its aftermath.

This event is sponsored by AUIS International Studies.
