Joint panel discussion with Dr Choman Hardi and Dr Bilal Wahab about women's rights in the region. Dr. Bilal spoke about the correlation between women's rights and oil wealth. Dr. Choman addressed the resilience of patriarchy and the state‘s role in utilizing economy, technology and religion to construct specific kinds of masculinity and femininity tailored to specific political ends. The discussion was part of the "Orange the World" campaign at AUIS to support elimination of violence against women and girls.
Panel on "Energy Policy; Financial Crisis" at 3rd Sulaimani Forum

The Institute of Regional and International Studies at the American University of Iraq, Sulaimani hosted the third annual Sulaimani Forum, "The Fertile Crescent in Turmoil: Challenges and Opportunities" on March 11-12, 2015. Through a series of public panels and private discussion sessions, this two-day event fostered diverse and rigorous dialogue on the unprecedented challenges currently facing the Middle East.
The Energy Policy panel, moderated by Dr. Bilal Wahab, brought together the Ministers of Finance of the KRG and Iraq, the Minister of Natural Resources and the Minister of Oil of the KRG and Iraq, and area experts to discuss the current state of play between the two governments, the challenges each side faces, and areas for further improvement and cooperation.
Oil and Gas Seminar

The Professional Development Institute at AUIS conducted a series of introductory oil and gas seminars for local government officials in the Germian province. The seminars gave an overview of the oil and gas industry, along with its its functional operation to the Kurdistan region. The three-day seminar was sponsored by AUIS donor, Genel Energy, and led by Bilal Wahab, AUIS lecturer and an expert on the oil and gas industry. The program covered a variety of interactive topics, including the life-cycle of oil and its history in Iraq; corporate social responsibility; and rules and regulations of oil contracts in the KRG region.

The Next Generation of Oil and Gas Relations

In this day-long series of private roundtable sessions and a concluding public panel, distinguished government, civil society, and industry representatives discussed and debated what is at the heart of one of the most contentious issues the people of this region face today: Iraq’s oil and gas policies.
Roundtable participants included Murat Ozcelik, former ambassador of Turkey in Iraq; Ben Lando, CEO and founder of the Iraq Oil Report; Shakir Wajid Shakir, country manager of Danagas and Brad Camp, president of DARB Global.
