The Admissions Department at American University of Iraq, Sulaimani (AUIS) held an Open House event on September 30, 2021 for new student applicants and their families to visit the University campus and get a feel for the student and faculty experience.
More than 200 new applicant and family attendees joined the event, first in the conference hall, where they were welcomed by AUIS President Dr. Bruce Walker Ferguson, followed by Mr. Rebeen Azad, Executive Director of Enrollment and Communications, who delivered a presentation about AUIS including programs of study, tuition, alumni success stories, and other information that applicants would find useful in making their final university decision.
Ms. Kani Azad, AUIS Admissions Coordinator, explained: “We invited the applicants and their parents to show them more of the University because when they come to apply, they usually don’t see all of campus life. They mainly see the Admissions process, but they do not see the students, instructors and other staff. That was the main purpose for the open house event to allow them to observe AUIS’s entire environment to have their own experience and perspective.”
After the presentation, applicants and their parents were given time to observe and explore the campus. An academic fair was set up outdoors where the attendees found faculty, students, and department chairs ready and available to answer questions about each academic program.
Prospective student Lara was excited to be part of the Open House, saying, “I chose AUIS because I find the environment very suitable for students, especially the ethics and the efforts the teachers put in to educate students."
She added, “The diverse culture at AUIS is very interesting as well, for me as a student. If I can meet people from different backgrounds and cultures here, it will help me in the future if I want to go abroad and study for a masters. I will be ready to deal with different cultures. It is nice to see foreign people around and see their hospitality, so AUIS improves their students on all levels.”
Suzan, the mother of a new applicant also expressed her very optimistic point of view for the future of her daughter if she graduates from AUIS.
“AUIS is a very unique and new culture for our people here in Kurdistan. It is creating a new society, a new community for the young generation here, and helping them to get access the outside world, and take new opportunities to improve them as good individuals in society,” she said.
She added, “Hopefully if my daughter studies here at AUIS, she will get access to a good education and improve her critical thinking skills, and that is what exactly what parents want for their children: to get a good education and, eventually, get good employment opportunities."
