AUIS and High Quality Hospitals Announce Clinical Research Partnership

Thursday, June 10, 2021 - 11:15

American University of Iraq, Sulaimani (AUIS) and High Quality Hospitals (HQH) announced today an exciting new collaboration to promote joint educational and research opportunities between the two organizations. The partnership will establish a framework for scientific collaboration, knowledge exchange, and experience sharing, as well as  provide facilities and support for undergraduate clinical training.

HQH’s Anwar Sheikha Hospital City in Sulaimani will serve as a primary teaching hospital for AUIS’s Medical Sciences department, which currently offers a Bachelor of Science (BSc.) degree in Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) and has an ambitious plan to add further medical and health-related majors in the near future. The MLS program at AUIS was established in 2018 and will graduate its first cohort of undergraduate students in Spring 2022.

The partnership will also encourage collaboration on biomedical research, under the supervision of HQH’s Cancer and Biomedical Research Center (CBRC), with specific focus on regenerative medicine as well as other critical and up-an-coming medical issues.

“We are delighted to undertake this new partnership with HQH’s Anwar Sheikha Hospital City,” said Professor Bruce Walker Ferguson, AUIS President. “Though still new, the hospital complex has developed an excellent reputation for research and patient care. Working together, we can help provide the region with top-quality, affordable health care through this important experiential education opportunity for our students.”

Commenting on the scope of the partnership, HQH General Director Dr. Seevar Sarbast said, “Most pharmaceuticals inside the Kurdistan Region are based on research from other countries and ethnicities, and we are planning to do extensive research on this subject in Kurdish society.”

He added, “HQH is not only a hospital to provide medical and healthcare, it is also a center for teaching and health-oriented prevention. We see this as our humanitarian and national responsibility. We believe that prevention methodologies come before medical care, and we are committed to working towards that.”
