Writing Center

The writing center is staffed with AUIS students who have completed a training seminar and continue to learn through staff education workshops. These qualified peer consultants are tutors, not teachers, trained to coach and guide you as you talk with them about your writing.

  • Sunday | 9:00 AM - 2:15 PM; 3:15 PM - 5:00 PM

  • Tuesday | 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM
  • Wednesday | 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM
  • Thursday | 9:00 AM- 2:15 PM; 3:15 PM-5:00 PM

While we accept both appointments and walk-in sessions, we encourage students to make appointments in advance, especially around midterms and finals. Appointments will always be given priority over walk-ins.
Appointments are for 30 or 60 minutes. However, during peak periods, appointments may be limited to 30 minutes. Be realistic about how much you can accomplish in a session; if you are working on a 10-page paper, you will need more than one session.
Remember to be on time. If you arrive more than 5 minutes late for your appointment, and another students is waiting, then your appointment will be cancelled and you will have to reschedule.
If you make an appointment, you must show up! Students who are repeat no-shows may lose their writing center privileges.
You may not schedule a conference on the day an assignment is due. There will be no exceptions to this policy.

When you walk into the AUIS Writing Center, your tutor will want to know about you, what you are working on and what goals you have for your writing.
The session is based on what you tell us you'd like to work on. We don't take your paper and mark errors; typically we read your paper with you and work through the areas you have told us you'd like to pay attention to. Our goal is to help you revise and improve a paper while you get a better sense of yourself as a writer.
The Writing Center is not only for students struggling with their writing. Anyone can benefit from a trained and experienced reader who will give undivided attention to their writing.
We strive to help students learn to be confident, careful writers who enjoy – or at least don’t hate! – the process of writing. We want you to get better at assessing and editing your own writing, which is why the Writing Center tutors will never copy edit or “fix” a paper for you.
We ask you to take an active role in improving your writing. Come to your session with a clear idea of what you want to work on; don’t expect the tutor to set the agenda. While we hope to help you improve each paper you’re working on, the Writing Center’s greatest benefit lies in repeated visits in which you learn to make your writing process more efficient, effective and enjoyable.
A big part of our mission is to show students the benefits of revision. Revising your writing allows you to see your work through new eyes, to explore different approaches to the same problem and to catch mistakes you’ll often miss when your writing is still fresh.

Please ensure that you adhere to these guidelines when working at the Writing Center, whether as a student or tutor.
Guidelines for Students
  1. Students should plan ahead and take an active role in improving their writing.
  2. Students should not expect the tutor to set the Agenda.
  3. Students are responsible for bringing their assignments with them and have thought about what they want to improve in a particular paper, or in their writing more generally. 
  4. Students working on papers longer than a 5-page paper will need more than one session. 
Guidelines for Tutors
  1. Writing Center tutors are students who have completed a training seminar and continue to learn through staff education workshops.
  2. Tutors mark errors on a paper but rather read through it with the student and work through areas previously identified.
  3. Tutors help students become better at assessing and editing their own work.
  4. Tutors will not set the agenda for a session.
